Thinking of switching out the OEM Western Digital (Blue Series) 500GB 7200RPM in an i3 iMac for a a Seagate Green 2TB 5900RPM drive.
Yay or Nay?

You'll need a Seagate temp sensor cable if you attempt this. If you want to make it easy, get a WD 2TB.

That is what I was curious about... why don't Seagate Drives come with a sensor 'thingy' or do they?

The cables come only from Apple, as far as I know.

You could beg an Authorized Service Provider to sell you the cable, or pay them to upgrade the drive for you.
The new temp sensor cables plug directly into the hard drives, I've read online that you can find the old style sensors that sit on the outside of the drive and are held on with adhesive, and that these work.
That Said..
Are you willing to risk cooking your drive? (It would be obvious to a repair center that it was a DIY project, and your warranty would probably be at risk.)

Agreed. So WD is the only choice here.

Actually you'd likely find the fans would run full blast when the SMC can't see the temp sensor.

Exactly. No connection = center fan at full blast. Short circuit = center fan at default rpm (around 1000) whatever happens. The first is annoying. The last is a risk for the HD and PSU which are cooled by that fan. I wouldn't do it.

The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

So, I hope that this magic sensor cable is 100% compatible with all WD drives. (blue, black, green, err. ....yellow, cyan etc. series)

The disadvantage to low power drives is the speed. I'd rather put an RE3 drive in an iMac.

I have no personal knowledge if this will work. I've used the "magic cable" with the 'black' drives.
