I have the opportunity to buy a FireWire 800 model G4 with dual 1.42GHz CPU for dirt cheap (bad power supply.) Only problem is that it'll cost me $40 in gas to get there and back to pick it up. The only reason I want it is to cannibalize the CPU and RAM as a cheap upgrade for QuickSilver to run OS 9 natively.

I noticed that the FW800 model had a 166MHz BUS, and the QuickSilver only has a 133MHz BUS, will this be a problem?

Nevermind, I think I found the answer, and it's no. Needs to be at least an MDD to swap the CPU. Darn.

Correct. The MDD and G4 Xserves have interchangeable CPUs. Only the heat sinks are different.

I think my next goal is to find an MDD for really cheap.

Surely you just need a new PSU for that one?

The MDD FW-800 will not boot OS 9 for him. All MDD 1.42's are FW-800. Some of the MDD 1.25's are FW-800 too, while some are not (and OS 9 bootable). All PowerMac G4s at 1.0 GHz or below will boot OS 9.
