Thanks for reading this post. I am trying to help a friend who wants to upgrade the os on his very very old EMAC. He knows he needs a new Mac but he is a struggling performer and can't spend much so he just wants to make his old piece of junk go from 10.3 to 10.4 so he can do some apps tha he can't currently do. He just upgraded his RAM so he can do this upgrade but I can't find him a cheap way to do this. He has:
Machine Model: eMac
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 700 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 500 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.2f1
Please advise. This friend is a touring comedian who has been on Howard, and came in 2nd on Last Comic Standing and he busts his ass to try to make it and as of now he hasn't and I really want to help him make this happen. Thanks again.

His eMac exceeds the minimum requirements for 10.4. What type of difficulty is he having installing it?

10.4 should install straight up, unless the eMac doesn't have a DVD drive?

Thanks for the response. I can't seem to find 10.4 software at a reasonable price and I've read that his very old emac will ONLY take a certain version of the software. I appreciate your time. Thanks.

10.4 commands a premium on ebay as it's the the last version of the OS that a lot of slower G4 Macs will run. Also most iPods require 10.4.7 or higher to work so older owners are forced to update to 10.4 when they get new iPods.

One idea would maybe you could find another Mac running 10.4.11 and migrate his user account onto that Mac via firewire, then reverse the firewire connection, clone the 2nd drive back onto the eMac, then delete the other persons user accounts leaving your friends. A bit convoluted but it may do the job.

Or I'm sure the 10.4 disk image can be found as a torrent. Download it, burn it using Disk Utility or Toast, and make your own install DVD.

I appreciate the help BM. I just bought it for 20.00 on ebay. I hope it works for the guy. He's a graet guy and a very funny comedian. You should check him out his name is Joseph Anthony he has a website. Thanks again.
