So, I booted up the new 27" Core i7 iMac, and my external monitor, a Dell 2407WFPHC, and my Magic Mouse both worked. It had 10.6.4 loaded.

Then I rebooted into my 10.6.5 drive from my old iMac. Both of the above peripherals stopped working. The external monitor went black, and the mouse could never be paired no matter what I did. Then I downloaded the 1 GB 10.6.5 combo update (in 5 minutes on my new 25 Mbps DSL), and reinstalled 10.6.5. The mouse worked again after that, but the monitor still doesn't work. The monitor worked fine in 10.6.5 on my MacBook Pro. The GPU is the Radeon HD 5750 with 1 GB RAM.

I believe this may be the 10.6.5 flickering issue, except my monitor doesn't flicker. It just doesn't work at all.

The Mac thinks it is outputting to the external screen. In fact, the Displays Prefs recognizes the monitor by name and adjusts the resolutions accordingly, with dual screen support. If I unplug the monitor, the iMac goes back to single screen mode. However, the whole time my external monitor is black.

I guess the good news is all my Firewire and USB drives that I've tried so far work fine. My bazillion external drives always worry me when I get new hardware, or else install a new point update.

Confirmed, it's an OS software issue.

I just booted up from the old drive from my dying iMac and my external monitor works fine. That drive only has 10.6.4 on it.

Unfortunately, I cannot use my 10.6.4 drive, since my 10.6.5 drive has all my new data on it (particularly emails, etc.) from the last 2 months while my iMac was in the shop.

I actually thought I was being very careful when I tested 10.6.5 first on my MacBook Pro before taking the plunge with the 10.6.5 update on my iMac drive. Everything worked fine with the MacBook Pro.

Have you posted anything on Apple's discussion forums? It would be interesting to see if one of their moderators chimes in on this.

I posted a bug report, but I don't remember if I posted this on the Apple discussion forums. However, I do know other people have posted similar problems on the Apple discussion forums, which also began with 10.6 after a few point updates.
