I just got an iMac dual-core. The Apple Pro speakers that plugged into my old iMac flat panel have a plug that's too small for the minijack port on my new iMac. I'd like to continue using the speakers with my new computer, but Apple Store doesn't have an adapter, neither does Radio Shack.

Any suggestions where to get an adapter? Seems like it would be a common need.

The speakers aren't powered speakers, and the line output isn't an amplified speaker output.

So you need an external amp for them.

The only one I know of was the Griffin iFire, which you can find used for ridiculous amounts of money on eBay.

You know, I kind of wonder if it wouldn't be that difficult to make an amp for these. From my (abeit very fast) googling about the iFire, it was just a 1.8mm minijack plug for the Apple Pro speakers, with a six-pin FW400 connection to get power in order to amplify the speakers. All you would need is to figure out the proper way to amp the speakers without killing them...
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...

There are more general amps that would work, but I would advice just getting some new speakers. The world is full of decent quality 2.1 systems in various designs at good prices.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx
