Hi all! Can I take an installation DVD (say panther) and copy it to a CD to use with a Mac with a CD Drive?

Not easily. If you have a firewire hard drive, you can make a disk image of the DVD and restore it to the hard drive. Much faster.

Panther was available as a set of 3 CDs, Tiger had a 3 CD version and a 1 DVD version.

You obviously can't fit the data from a DVD on a CD, but you should be able to make a disk image of the DVD (on a computer with a DVD drive), copy it on the target computer, and 'restore' it onto a partition which you can boot from to do the install on the rest of the HD. This makes for a much faster installation also (though an external drive would be fastest) (As I realized Waragainstsleep already said above - shouldn't type this late at night!).
