Hi all,

I want to buy a 17U server cabinet for my old Xserves. Its 600mm wide and 800mm deep, completely enclosed in metal with a glass door. I need a good estimate for the weight so I know how much it will cost to ship it. I reckon about 50kg.

Anyone have a better/more informed guess than that?

Vital information is missing.

Is there a particular cabinet that you're looking at? One on a website.

Most online buying sites have a shipping estimation system that tells you roughly how much shipping will be after you insert your zip code.

Yeah, its on eBay and the seller has no way to weigh it. Hence the guesswork.

Then look else where. If the seller can't tell you all the details of the item they're selling; red flag

Yeah, seller should have some idea so you can figure shipping costs to the price.

First thought. He/she can't weigh it, because they haven't stolen it yet.

Inventory control helps reduce costs for everyone. Don't nick it until you have a firm order in hand. Cuts down on storage of incriminating evidence, and eliminates theft of unsalable items.

Do people steal empty server cabinets?

Seller listed it is pickup only. I was going to get a courier to pick it up since it was too far to drive.
The seller came through in the end and managed to find a way of weighing it. Sadly the only affordable courier decided to put their prices up since yesterday and it was still out of my price range. Damn. If it had been an hour away, I'd have bitten his hand off.

Server cabs are a funny category of item. If you need one, they cost a bomb. If you have one you don't need, they are next to worthless.

For those interested, it was 36Kg. Thanks for playing!

Is that your M.O.? When I worked at a grocery store as a kid I'd nick stuff I wanted to eat for lunch right before lunch...

As long as there are people who buy empty server cabinets there will others who steal them.

Assuming shipping in the UK is somewhat similar to that in the US, it's likely that some sort of dimensional weight will come into play and the actual weight will be effectively irrelevant. Shipping of large, relatively light objects is typically billed by size and you will spend a fortune to ship this rack.
