I have two problems on my iMac
1) When awakening from sleep, my iMac that is, the mouse and keyboard
have frozen.
The mouse is plugged into the keyboard USB port, which in turn is
plugged into a rear USB port on the iMac
The only way I can cure this is to power down using the rear on/off
switch.
Upon powering back up, the problem has cured.
This happens once or twice a day, sleep is around 5 times a day.
I have other devices plugged into other USB ports, but they are
usually off most of the time, ie printer.
Help please.
2) On powering up, just the past few days, the display is noticeably
overbright.
If I select display preferences, then color, then close that window
without selecting or changing anything else, the display reverts back
to normal brightness
Help again please.
TIA

Issue 1: Try disconnecting all devices not in use before sleeping - indeed, whenever they are not in use. Most likely one of them is not working right.
Issue 2: Try resetting the PRAM as detailed in that link. If that doesn't work, you likely need a new PRAM battery. The PRAM battery retains settings when the power is disconnected - if the plug is often out when the computer is turned off, the PRAM battery will eventually run out and cause issues like this.

Already tried those, thanks
And my iMac is left plugged in when powered down, I remember that from my old iMac, unplugging for holidays, lightning etc.
No change

I removed a "faulty" USB hub, and have had no problems since.
I suspect when the iMac slept, and the USB power was removed, the hub didn't wake up properly.
