Can anyone help me?

upon boot i get the grey apple screen. (im pressing command - s key)

to which the scren goes black and i get this

unresolved kernal trap (cpu 0) : 0x300 - data access DAR=0x0000000000000028 PC=0x00000000002FBCEC

any ideas?

if i dont press cmd - s , i get to the open firmware page "invalid memory access at"

so i turned it on with one ram stick in. The light at the front came on and stayed on the fans were on etc but no screen. looking in the back leds 1 and 2 are on.

there is no chime or anything.

i tried the other stick , same thing happened.

i pressed the smu button with the second ram stick in , it booted to the grey apple screen and then to OF.

i got

"BAD DEPTH= 4 ff8ab051 ff8ab04c ff8ab040
here= ff971174
fc-addr=2666f8
invalid memory access at %SRR0 : 00000000.05610d04 %SRR1: 10000000.00003030

intresting? lol

It would help if we knew the exact iMac model. The model number is on the bottom of the foot plate.

When was the last time the iMac worked? What happened right before it stopped booting? ie - any odd behavior.

Both RAM sticks might be bad, or of an incompatible type. Also, with the back off, check the capacitors on the circuit board. Look for any that are bulging and/or leaking.

ok i put 2 sticks of 512mb in.

one was pc2700 and the other pc3200 im aware the pc2700 is incompatible and the pc3200 stick i have doesnt work on its own , but for some reason i managed to install leopard and it worked for a few hours , i then got the corrupt stack error.

Its the imac g5 rev b 2056 als

should i just buy the ram from pcworld or from macupgrades.co.uk?

The iMac G5 ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) requires PC-3200 (DDR 400) or faster. Your stick of PC-3200 is bad I expect, and plugging both in may be fooling the iMac into using the PC-2700 above spec.

It sounds like you got the iMac without RAM and have been plugging in available sticks to make it work.

note: the max DIMM size is 1 GB for this model. Maxing both RAM slots gives 2 GB overall.

Crucial appears to be cheaper, if I can trust money converters found on the web:

Computer memory upgrades for Apple iMac (G5-1.6GHz, 17-inch) Desktop/PC from Crucial.com
