Just purchased an Imac 27 with the i7 2.93 quad core. I've ordered an extra 8GB ram to bring the computer up to 12GB. The computer will be used almost exclusively for photoshop. I've watched a youtube vid on adding ram which seems easier than easy. One question though. Should I leave the 2 2gb chips in slots one and two or put the two 4GB chips in one and two and add the smaller chips in three and four ? Or does it matter ?

Second newbie question...

Does a mac save temp internet files and graphics similar to a PC ? Is there a clear cache function on a mac or does just clearing history wipe out everything ?

Thanks in advance

Leave them in place. The exact positioning of the RAM chips is only important in the sense that the two channels should be paired - whether the big DIMM or the small DIMM is first in the channel doesn't matter.

If you use the Safari browser (looks like a compass, in your Dock - it's the most common browser on a Mac and the one that is bundled with a new Mac), you can empty this cache from the Safari menu in the menubar. You can also do a more complete reset of history and cookies etc from the same menu.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

Alternately, you can activate "Private Surfing" for whenever you wish to leave no traces on your machine.
