I recently took the screen off of my G4 I Mac. I read that once the 15 In screen was disconnected I would not be stuck with the 1024x768 resolution. I removed the screen and reassembled the machine and when I booted up I was still in 1024x768 with no larger choices. I am using the mini-VGA to VGA adapter to a 24 Inch LCD. I know the monitor is capable of resolutions up to 1920x1200. Is there another plug I have to physically unplug? Does the OS still think the old screen is plugged in somehow? I have Google'd every possible way I can think of to ask this question without any luck. I know this machine is coming up on 10 yrs old but I think it can still be used for basic inter-tubing or media player. Any help is appreciated.

Did you disconnect the LVDS cable at the logic board end? What OS do you have installed? It should go above 1024x768 easily.

On this image, its the one directly above the ATA connectors for HDD and CDROM.
It usually has a cap over the connector.
I forgot these machines were limited to video mirroring. Have a look at these:

My main board only has 1 IDE cable. The CD and HD must both on on the single cable. I already have unplugged a cable from the old screen labeled "TMDS"

In that photo album, there is a photo with 2 circles on it. Those show where I disconnected the old screen. The plug that is near my IDE ribbon has the fan and speaker connectors on it, nothing else.
Do you think that SwitchResX is the only option?

It sounds like you have disconnected the display properly. Does the display show up in System Profiler or Display Preferences?
I don't know how else Apple could have restricted the resolution. If the display is not detected and you still can't up the resolution then SwitchresX is your best bet.

SwitchResX actually did the trick. It was a little more complicated to figure out then I had hoped. I was hoping to see all the possibilities based on the video card and the monitor but instead I had to manually pick a resolution. But any way I have made some steps in the right direction. Thanks for your help
