This problem started last week, and I'm stumped.
I booted my machine last week and it got as far as the apple logo and the spinning icon. Would not boot. Booted in safe mode and couldn't find a problem, but had no sound. Put in my system disk (Mac OS X dvd, and booted to it, then checked disk utility. Found problems with both the permissions and the disk itself (verify found corruption on the hard disk). Ran repair on both permissions and the disk.
Came back that the disk was successfully repaired, so tried to reboot and same problem persist.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanx!

What were the drive problems it found? Your hard drive could be failing. Back up anything you care about.

I had the almost exact same problem as you here:
Mac Pro 1.1 won't boot past grey screen
Could not boot other than into safe boot and lost sound.
Still have not been able to resolve this, so just left the status quo remain.

Could be an issue with the soundcard or if you are lucky just the driver. HDD is another likely suspect though. Can you/have you reinstalled your OS?

Thanks for the response, here are the two error messages I receive:
"Invalid volume file count: it should be 9855** instead of 9855**.
Invalid volume directory count: it should be 264***, instead of 264***"
When I do the repair, it says its successful, but still can't boot without going into safe boot.

Thanks for your response. Is there a way I can disable the soundcard to see if thats the issue?
