What's the best way to test if the built-in microphone in an iMac is working or not ?
I recently got skype but my callers are unable to hear me. The Input volume of the Internal microphone is at its highest level (re System Preferences) and I have the sound output going to the stereo audio amplifier.

If you make noise, do you see the level meter in System Preferences actually registering signal?

Also, double-check in the Sys Prefs that the internal microphone is actually chosen as input.

No Spheric Harlot, clapping loudly in front of the microphone registers zilch and yes Oreocookie I have that open and it is chosen.
I'm beginning to wonder if this issue is related to my broken dvd drive in that they both should operate perfectly through the logic board ?

Its possible it simply wasn't properly reconnected during one of your many many repairs. They can get loose on some iMacs when repeatedly opened. Especially the white ones.

Thank you Waragainstsleep, although I have the aluminum 2007 model it's helpful to hear of that possibility.
Nevertheless, I searched throughout the Apple support pages to see if the likely-hood of finding another solution to this issue, and leaned that running the Apple Hardware Test might at least offer up the error codes for both that issue and the intractable DVD drive issue. But hey I merely discovered that following these instructions the Apple Hardware Test wouldn't run ?

Those instructions might be a bit new. Many recent Macs have AHT hidden away on their original Apple-branded HDD but before that it was on the supplied grey DVDs. Have a look at yours and see if it says AHT in the small print on either of them.
If it does, pop it in and hold the D key.
I'm not sure you will get error codes for those parts but its worth a go.

I've been trying to run it from within the internet, largely because I'm unable to use the the DVD drive. More about that here.
Holding down the D key didn't engage the AHT, although thankfully the random noises of the DVD drive don't seem to be occurring they only happen a few times after waking from sleep mode,
Oh I thought the system itself would have somewhere in it, a list of possible error codes, although those would likely only be privy to an Apple technician, huh ?
