I recently purchased a new Intel Mac. I transferred all my data from my five year old eMac to my new iMac with little trouble. Most everything went fine, but I have hit a few small snags.

Firstly my HP PSC1210 AIO printer will not work at all. It is several years old and perhaps it's just not compatible with Snow Leopard. I also can't find a driver for it.

Secondly my registered Snapz Pro X 2.3.1 has reverted to demo mode. Can I retrieve the license code from my old eMac somehow? When it was purchased and registered it was done by a friend and he did it under his name (because at the time I didn't have a credit card). But I've since lost touch with him and I can't find the license code written anyway to restore my paid for Snapz Pro back to a fully working registered mode. Is this license stored anywhere on my old eMac and can I retrieve it?

Any help?

Power on and connect the HP printer to your new Mac. Run Software Update while connected to the internet. Snow Leopard will look for drivers specific to the manufacturer and, if available, offer to install them.

Regardless of what it lists, you should still be able to print with it.

Thanks. That worked.

Now I only have to figure out how to get my Snapz Pro out of demo mode without having to buy another license key.

...Oops. The printer function works, but the scan/copy function won't work from the computer.

Try Image Capture. It can work well to scan from flatbed or feeder. Image Capture is in your Applications folder.

I could be one of the luckiest schmucks alive! I tried something really simple. I went to my old eMac's Hard Drive/Users/(your name)/Library/Preferences and simply copied the original plist file com.ambrosiasw.snapz.plist and replaced the plist file in the same location on my new iMac...and it worked!

Snapz Pro is no longer running in demo mode and has reverted to full working mode.

Awesome!

Some apps store info like that in a plist. If you opened it in TextEdit, it'd have either the original code or some hash or derivation.

Hmm, I didn't think of opening it up in TextEdit. That might have been simpler. I'll have to remember that.

Another favourite of mine that this trick works with is Visual Hub,
MacBook 2.0GHz CD; MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Late '08; PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1GHz; 3x Xserve G4 1GHz; Mac Mini 2GHz; Big pile of broken and working bits;
