I have an imac running 10.6.8 that i bought used (no discs) I was trying to change the Admin user account name (John Doe) and couldnt so instead I created a new account (Rian) and moved over all my files music, pics,etc. Then I did something truly bad, in the get info screen of the HD I changed the Rian account to owner and applied the permissions to all subfolders within. It sounded like the right thing to do at the time. It immediatley began throwing up error messages. So I rebooted. Now computer won't boot just stuck on the grey screen with the wheell turning.
Can anyone help me?

There is no undo button for that. You need a Snow Leopard disk to reinstall from.
MacBook 2.0GHz CD; MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Late '08; PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1GHz; 3x Xserve G4 1GHz; Mac Mini 2GHz; Big pile of broken and working bits;

Brian says (9:16 AM): I was looking at houses in Ottawa... I actually have a temptation in me to move
Jeff ******* says (9:19 AM): Eww, Ottawa is gross. It's infested with politicians, and presently, 1 Harper as well.

That would still require a reinstall in this case and the OP has no discs.

If I can get a Snow Leopard disk. Would I be able to save all my files?
I'm really surprised that I was able to do something so catastrophic without being warned ( even though I know I was at fault) I just don't want to have to wipe it clean since I have alot of music, pictures and video that I would lose.

You could easily retrieve personal files if you can borrow another Mac or if you can get the SNow Leopard disc and an external drive, you could install SL on the external then boot from that to retrieve data.

Try booting in single user mode (Hold Command-S), then run the following commands:

/usr/sbin/mount -uw /
/usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /
MacBook 2.0GHz CD; MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Late '08; PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1GHz; 3x Xserve G4 1GHz; Mac Mini 2GHz; Big pile of broken and working bits;
