My mac mini runs windows xp and mac OS 10.6.8. For no apparent reason the windows partition is suddenly refusing to load (the screen goes black). The mac partition still works fine though.

Is there anything I can do? What could have caused this to happen?

Windows tends to do this in my experience. Perhaps you can get it to safe boot by pressing F8 and run chkdsk?

That's the best first step. If it boots in Safe Mode, you can run chkdsk, review what's happening with drivers, apps and so on, and you can get a good dpidea of what could be giving you problems from the console messages you see scrolling past during the boot process. If it does not boot in Safe Mode, you should see plenty of indications for why, like a problem with the boot sector, or other fundamental problem. Most such problems are fixable.

I've tried booting up by pressing F8 (nothing happened). I've tried booting up using the windows CD (nothing happened either).

What options are there left?

When you hold down the Option key at startup, is your Windows partition shown? And if you select to boot it, what happens when you do?

Yep both the mac and windows partiton are shown. The mac partition boots up without any problems, if however I select the windows partition to boot it the screen goes black and I get the error message 'signal not found'.

You mean it's your monitor saying "signal not found," so Windows isn't even getting to warm up the monitor before it crashes. That's not good. You may have to copy your user data from the Windows partition and start fresh. It sounds like the partition got seriously corrupted.

Yep the monitor displays that, windows doesn't even appear. I was clinging onto the vague hope there might be some way of avoiding a full reinstall but looks like I'll have to bite the bullet. Thanks for your help.
