Got an old eMac G4 which somebody tried installing Linux on. I have the Tiger 10.4 DVD but the optical drive keeps rejecting it ( I think it might just be a CDROM). Tried an external IDE DVD to USB connection but it keep telling me to type "mac-boot", but it just recycles. Also, tried holding down the C key during the process. Anyone got any suggestion? Thanks.

Older emacs sometimes had the superdrive go south, prob why the DVD won't work in the machine. Not sure why external isn't working for you... do you have another machine to make a disk image you can use via usb stick?

1. Try holding down option (alt) instead of "C" during boot.
2. Is this a retail 10.4 (black with a silver X on it) or one that came with a machine (grey disks)? If it came with a machine, it will only boot machines of that series.

Booting from USB devices was not supported until the Intel Macs. Some of the later PPC Macs can boot from USB, but the firmware support isn't complete. You have to type some manual commands into OpenFirmware, and I don't know if your eMac is one of them with unofficial support.
If you have an external DVD drive with FireWire, you can use that. You can also use another Mac made in the last ~8 years if it has FireWire. You'd boot the other Mac into FW Target Disk Mode, and its DVD drive will appear as an external drive you can use.

Oh crud.
Completely forgot about that.
Rev. A and B iMacs also booted from USB, IIRC, but at 1.1 speeds, no sane man would ever want to.
