WHOA!!! Has anyone heard of this situation?

Hello:
Well, it's a VERY weird situation with my G4/500 (single chip). The FireWire peripherals I had worked fine on it for a long time, so when it started behaving erratically (sometimes would mount; sometimes not), I thought: Uh-OH.
At the Apple repair shop, my iPod mounted perfectly in OS 9.2.2. The good FireWire drive mounted perfectly. The bad (second) FireWire drive was of no surprise; it didn't mount.
BUT at home, neither iPod or good FireWire drive will mount in either OS 9.2.2 or OS X 10.1.2. I did not change anything.
In any case, I replaced one of the internal hard drives with the drive from the bad FireWire enclosure. That "new" internal hard drive won't mount in OS 9.2.2 but DOES mount in OS X 10.1.2 beautifully. (The "new" internal hard drive is a secondary, or slave, drive.)
The iPod FREEZES OS X 10.1.2 and will not mount. The same thing happens with the good FireWire drive.
The Apple place said I do not have a problem with my logic board.
When I saw the intermittent mounting of the FireWire drive, I went ahead and reinitialized the startup disk and reinstalled both operating systems over a very empty drive last weekend.
I'm going to have to talk to these people again tmw and find out what the heck is going on. :-(
Just wanted to know whether other folks on this forum have had a similar situation and/or have come across workarounds.

I have the same model G4 you have but have never had any problems with Firewire. Have you tried updating your firmware?

1. Make sure your firmware is up to date.
2. Zap your PRAM several times
3. Reset your power manager
4. Check inside your chassis to make sure that everything is seated properly (ram, etc)

Hello:
Thanks to all who responded.
My firmware has been checked out all right.
My friend suggested that I reinitialize the "missing" hard drive from OS X 10.1 and check yes to enable OS 9's drive setup features.
Voila! The drive showed up in BOTH OS 9 and OS X 10.1.2, and I haven't had a problem since.
As for the FireWire issue, zapping the PRAM seemed to solve the problem.

I have a dual 500 G4 and I have an odd problem in OS X. My 100GB Firewire drive will not mount in OS X when Formac Studio is also plugged into any of the firewire ports. It works fine in OS 9 I can rip the video straight to my firewire drive but no go in X.
