Now that others are getting their dual G5s, I'll be interested in comparing notes.

My system is quiet most of the time... EXCEPT for an annoying hi-pitched chittering noise (think cicadas on speed) that occurs from time to time. Actually, it's there at a pretty low volume level (background radiation) much of the time... but occasionally gets noticeably louder and and gets noticeably under my skin!

The incidence of the noise I'm hear seems not to be related to disk activity, which would have been my first guess... but instead to video activity.

I have the stock ATI 9600 and I'm running at 1280x1024, 75Hz (but it occurs equally at all resolutions, it seems) and I hear that chitter when a new web page loads, and even when doing things that don't touch the disk at all like when I scroll a document window... and even when hiding and showing the dock.

It occurs to me that in addition to being extremely porous in terms of air circulation, the G5 is equally likely to easily transmit interior sounds... which makes the relative silence of the fans (at least most of the time) even more of a feat. And BTW, the ATI 9600 *doesn't* have a fan...

I don't think of myself as a particularly persnickety person about computer noises... but this is so far in the upper registers that it's a big nuisance.

So, I guess I want to know if

is it just my machine
does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing on other machines?
Thanks...

I have this on my G4/1000 (Sawtooth), though I'd describe it as more of a hiss than a chittering. Strangely, when it's in "noticeable mode", USB activity seems to strengthen it - for example holding down the mouse button. I have absolutely no idea what it is
