G4 desktop, Audio/Video, 1.6 Ghz upgrade, 500 GB HD (partitioned into two 250s), Original 32 GB with OS 10.4.11 and OS 9.2xx duped on one of the 250 GB partions. Booted and ran fine on the duped 250 partition starting with OS 10.4.11. Switched startup to OS 9 on same partition. Tried to restart, but got the diskette icon with the blinking question mark.
Tried to boot from the OS installation CD, but only got the choice to install the OS. Will a Norton Utilities v 8.0 be able to boot? What other alternatives to re-boot are there?

Don't do Norton, not a good idea on OS X. You could hold down the option key at startup and see if it can see your OS X install. Your trip in OS 9 may have focked up the disk directory - it happened to me on my iBook and Disk Warrior saved me where DIsk Utility could not.

Apple and Intel: As kosher as a cheeseburger.

Thanks Big Mac,

I found a good page on the Apple support site:

A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

I'll be trying that this weekend.

First thing to do is run disk utility from the install disc see what it sees. Disk Warrior is most often the solution, but if it fails, techtool can often help.
