I have a g4 933 and an ATTO UL3D 64 bit SCSI asapter.

I would like to know hot to set up a raid0 configuration for my system.

1) Is the raid0 (stripe) a hardware or software configuration ?

2) Do I need ay special tools or "bios" settings to set this up ?

any pointers are greatly appreciated.. thanks!!

What kind of disks do you have for the raid? (internal or is it connected via scsi since you mention that)

We are two major generations past G4 at this point, lifetimes in the world of computer tech. Generally IMO putting any money into a G4 is very inappropriate. Is there some specific legacy app that you need to run on G4?

RAID0 will about double the risk of failure of that old 2-drive array, and might about double the hard drive throughput but will provide no improvement to latency.

IMO with an old box like that if it is working for you the best thing is simply not to mess with it.

Gee thanks allot for the "help" there Allen .....

WHO (besides yourself) mentioned anything AT ALL about $$$.
....so instead of actually helping out and offering good advice, you simply promote excess consumption implying i get new hardware and waste perfectly good hardware that already would do everything thing I would require it to do.

Great solution guy !!!
next please!
(also : there is No hard drives in the machine currently)

Who do you think you are? If that's your response to honest attempts by unpaid folks trying to be helpful, don't expect much response from forum participants.

As to $$$, for most folks time is $$$. The value of your time may be zero but that is unusual. Similarly, items like two uninstalled hard drives have opportunity cost in that they could be used elsewhere or sold. Duh.

If you don't consider the comment about RAID0 risks/benefits "actually helping out and offering good advice" then who knows what else you may just not get?

Good luck with your project but don't expect a lot of free online help with that attitude. Note too that we never did receive info as to what you would be trying to run.

The thread is SPECIFICALLY called "ATTO UL3D strpe with OSX10.4 on G4 933"

so if YOU missed the part about OSX ..well nuff' said!

Wow, slow down here, this was uncalled for.
SierraDragon is an experienced member who was trying to give you advice.

These questions are key, and also show that you are a totally new at RAID. As such one would expect a respectful attitude to those who know vastly more.

Well, if by pointers you mean helpful information, Allen gave you a good measure, and you clearly don't appreciate it.

Unless those happen to be 36GB Raptors, you will be turbo charging a go-cart. Even if they are Raptors, a whole host of other bottlenecks will severely limit any speed increase in the read, write or access times in your HD. But, you will increase you chances of overall failure quite significantly.

Well, to get any benefit at all, however stunted, you would at least need to upgrade your HDs, which would probably cost nearly as much as upgrading to used mac mini, that would run circles around the most turbo-charged G4. The idea of RAIDing two ancient 36GB drives in RAID0, just makes me want to laugh out loud. Allen's assumption was pretty reasonable.

Huh? If it will do everything you require it to do, why spend money and time putting in a questionably useful and significantly risky RAID?

We have another user on this site (peeb), who also acts about 14 years old. With such an attitude, you will soon be ignored, so please act with a little respect toward those you are asking favors of, and you will get the help you need. Otherwise, "Sayonara!"
