So upon wake up, my Feb. 2008 Mac Pro's video card, Nvidia 8800 GT, decided to blow this morning upon a system wake up. All I got was a black screen with my video card's fan roaring full blast with no system response. I've taken it into an apple store and they swapped the video card out and it booted like normal. So with that said, no apple care ftl, what the heck video card can I purchase to put back in this thing. They wanted like 279$ for another Nvidia 8800 gt replacement.
Apple's price on the Nvidia GT120 is really nice at 149$ but does it really really work like the comments on the apple store? What else is out there?

You could go for a ATI HD 4870. I got mine for $350.00 not very cheap. Before that I was using a x1900xt only reason I upgraded was because I want to pull more graphic power in windows gaming.
I still have the 1900 if you are interested its more powerful than the GT120 from what I have read.
Tho I will have to say the ATI HD 4870 is really nice. Not one problem thus far and I have had it about 4 months.

It looks like it'll be between the ATI 4870 and the EVGA GTX 285. I'm pushing for the GTX atm, everything I've seen has been okay, a few issues, but it looks like nothing more then issues with drivers. I remember when I got my macp pro, the 8800 gt was having drivers issues past 10.5.2, so I'm hoping these will pass.
I'd go for the 4870 but 512 ram, really?

Just remember that if you need to drive two 30" displays, the mac version 4870 has the newfangled display miniport and most likely you will need an adapter to run the 2nd display. If the 2nd display requires the dual-dvi adapter, count on adding another $100 to the tally. In some cases the GTX285 might be a better deal since it has 2 dual-DVI connectors on the back. GT120 has the same port configuration as the 4870 but is cheap enough to buy 2 if you needed two dual-DVI connections.

Yeah, I'm not blessed to have big monitors, I've got dual 19"ers both with div connections.
Looking at the big picture:
Stock 8800 GT from apple was 279$.
ATI4870 is 350$ + another 30$ for the adapter, so that's 380$ One year warrenty.
GTX 285 Mac version is 430$ ish at Amazon.com. Two year Warrenty.
I'm going for the GTX285, I'm hopeing the OS will eventually push the technology that is loaded in the card in closer future updates of snow leopard.
