Am I supposed to use it right out of the box, allow it to drain completely, then charge it fully...

Or fully charge it initially, then drain completely, then re-charge it?

It usually is close to fully charged out of the box. You can fully charge it initially, drain it completely and then re-charge it fully. That should be enough to calibrate it.
