You could do a few things (if you haven't already) to extend battery life somewhat:
* When the notebook is running on battery power, make sure the screen brightness is lower.
* Turn off Bluetooth if you are not using it.
* Turn off the built-in Ethernet if you are not using it.
* Turn off Airport if you are not using it.
I get 3 hours of *real* usage time on battery power (a lot of Internet usage with only the Airport as the network device, no disc use, 60-70% brightness, etc.)

A perfectly normal 17-inch PowerBook gets about two hours out if its battery while playing DVD's. Your PowerBook is not defective. OS 10.2.5 will not make your PowerBook's battery last longer.

Yeah, that battery life actually sounds about right. To extend your battery life, follow the tips provided, and also, step down the performance from Highest to the evergy saving selection that downclock the CPU & disables the L3 cache. Screen brightness and having Bluetooth & AirPort enabled when you're not using them are major battery drainers.

Although I have a 15" 1gz model, I would advise you do what I do - scale the performance value in Energy Saver to reduced for battery usage, and lower the brightness on the lcd.
When doing this, I can get 3 hours plus. I was traveling via car to Connecticut last week, I managed to listen to lots of mp3s and then watch (the very good film) Road to Perdition on DVD.

Just a note for those who might be unaware.
The 15" 1 GHz uses much less power, and has an 11% bigger battery than the 17". 2+ish hours seems about right for the 17".

He didn't say he is playing DVD's, so if you are correct then he may not be getting "normal" battery life.

That's also the battery life I get for just normal use. 2 hours. It's pretty normal... I just wish they will somehow later on come up with a battery that will have more power in it so that it can last last least 3 to 4 hours for normal use...

You were right, I haven't play DVD on my 17" yet! I can't imagine how can I finish a DVD while in the flight?? If normal usage only last 2 hours......wouldn't DVD consume more power?
Anyway, thank you guys for all your valuable suggestions!

Wait wait wait....when you decrease to "Best Battery Life" it also disables the L3 cache?
I thought it only steps down the processor?

1) Make sure that you calibrate your battery. To do so, charge the unit up so the battery is charged to 100%, and then unplug the unit and use it on battery power until the PowerBook puts itself into sleep mode automatically (because the battery is so low). Then charge it back up again to 100%, and it is calibrated.
2) Do not use the screen at full brightness. Use the F1 key on your keyboard to lower the brightness.
3) Turn off Bluetooth and Ethernet.
4) If you are not using AirPort, turn that off. That along uses lots of power.
5) In the Energy Saver preference panel, turn the Processor Performance to Reduced, instead of Highest.

Go to System Preferences
Go to Network
In Network, click on the menu bar that said "Show". Go over to Network Port Configurations.
And then turn off the ones that you aren't gonna use, also you might want to put what ever one you do use up to the top of the list (well I guess it doesn't matter since you are turning off anyways).

I noticed, on my 17", that when I charge off included 65w adaptor and then unplug the battery indicator shows about 2:55.
If I charge from empty with my older adaptor used on the Tibook it shows 1:55.
The battery wants to be calibrated/charged by the newer higher power adaptor and if you use the older ones it will (temporarily) screw up the calibration.
Now I use the older adaptor just to operate the computer not to charge it and use the newer adaptor to charge.
