so I have one of the first ibooks (year and a half old) and am running 9.1 on it and yesterday it gave me an error message saying something along the lines of, its going to sleep to preserve memory content because its running on reserve battery power. so then it shut down and I haven't been able to turn it on since, even when its plugged in. when I hit the power button it tries to turn on and a few times made a wierd noise but doesn't do anything.
are these known issues?
any suggestions on ways to get it started or more importantly to get some of my files off of it?
I don't have access to an extra battery to try.
thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Yikes, that's definitely not good...you should certainly give AppleCare a call (hoping you have it) or at least give an Apple Store a visit in hopes of at least being able to use an in-store battery to save some of your files. If AppleCare or the Apple Store won't work, I think you're last option is to just find someone w/ a battery you can swap in to get your files off. Good luck w/ it!

As AssassyN suggested I would go to an Apple store or dealer to get your iBook checked out. If it need to be repaired you can ask the dealer to back up your data and give you a copy..

I might suggest trying to reset the power management unit. Typically it's found on the back of the powerbook- a small black, round button. Sometimes it's not round. You push it in and hold it for 7 seconds. This sometimes resolves the issue of the bttery not holding a charge, AC not charging, etc.
