I know people have posted in other threads about difficulties with some security locks and the placement of the lock slot on the 17" -- so which locks have people ended up actually using? Any recommendations?

According to
http://discussions.info.apple.com/We...3r.2@.3bc123e2

"Apple says that the Slim Microsaver works."

(BTW in case you're wondering, it's in the 12" Forum because Apple only recently made a separate 17" Forum)

Yeah some people *were* saying that the lock wasn't in the best place, and was causing issues with interfering w/ the AC adapter or something of that nature...personally, I'm not using one, but best of luck in finding one that works best!

Better find some way to lock all those goodies down at college and/or make sure they're covered by insurance!

LoL, I'm staying a pretty secure place, and plus my roomate is a fella I've had in my class since 1st grade all the way up, so there's a great deal of trust in him. Plus, locks on doors do wonders, and negating to brag does as well.

A lock is still a good idea. I know that when I lived in the dorms I would often run off with some friends, then my roommate would take off and not close the door because he thought I would be right back. It only takes about 10 seconds for someone to walk into your room, snatch your PB, and take off. Heck, we even had someone steal a laptop bag here at my office while I was in the bathroom (he obviously assumed there was a laptop in it, but he was wrong). I strongly suggest that any college student use a lock whenever they are keeping their laptop on their desk, no matter how may people are in the room. You just never know.

The placement of the lock slot on the 12" PB is probably the most annoying aspect of owning it. It is the front most slot and interferes with the headphone slot and makes it so the lock is always right next to your hand while typing. Very poor design choice uncharacteristic of apple. And I agree, you should have a lock just in case.
