I currently have the 30gig 4200rpm ibm drive that came with the 667 DVI powerbook........
was wondering how the drive noise would be if I got the IBM 40GNX ?
how's the noise & if possible, the relative speed increase?
comparisons with the 4200 30gig ibm drive would be appreciated.
Thanks for any help!

I have had a 40 GNX in my Pismo for about 2 years. When I reaplaced my stock toshiba HD, I immediatly upgraded to OS X so I really cant compare the speed differences. But I can tell you about noise. The tosiba drove me up the wall with its whine. After about 2 years I could hear it when I entered the room. After I installed the GNX it was whisper quiet. After a year's worth of use it has gotten louder but its more of a low fan hum than a loud whine. Its at an acceptable level in my pbook.

I went from the stock 10gig IBM 4200rpm drive in a To 400 to the 40Gig that you mention.
It is much faster and much quieter.
No question in my mind.
I then moved the 40 into a 667DVI and am quite happy with it.

noise level wise .... my current drive [ibm 30 gig that came with my powerbook 667 dvi] is VERY quiet .....
i'm hoping i won't lose this luxury with a 40GNX upgrade ..... ???

I just got an external FireWire 40GNX, and it's very quiet. No doubt it will get louder, but it's MUCH quieter than the now-whiny Toshiba in my Pismo when it was brand new.

I changed my TiPB 10 GB HD for the 40 GB GNX, overall I would say that there was around a 10 % speed increase. Xbench with 10 GB was around 54 and after installing the GNX moved to 59.
The GNX is louder than the original though.
