hi,
something bad happened...
today while being at a client whose floor is covered with synthetic carpet, I experienced some static charges because of (I guess) my rubber soled shoes.
I plugged a network cable into my ibook, and later while i wanted to exchange some files 5 touched the Track-pad, and a big static discharge happened.
The fan turned on and than the ibook went into sleep mode immediately.
I couldn't wake it up any more and I even couldn't do a reset....
So took the battery out to reset it and afterward it would only start with the ac power.
Since then one of the battery's charge light is glowing constantly even when the battery is detached and the battery is not recognised by the computer anymore.
(it was around 90% full before the incident)
I did the whole zap pram, reset PMU routine already to no avail.

The computer worked fine with another battery, and my battery showed the same symptoms while in the other ibook.

Any suggestions, or do I have to get a new battery?

Well, it certainly sounds like that battery is fried. Just be thankful that the iBook itself still works properly!

I had almost the exact same experience.

Are you still under warranty? I went to the apple store and they ordered a new battery that would be arrive in about 5 days from the time the order went out.

Otherwise, you're kinda screwed and should order a new battery. Lately I've been having some doubts however as to whether just the battery was damaged.

My mac won't wake up from sleep mode at times (the pulsating power light is off, but the system is still powered up), which makes me wonder if a hardware component has failed. On occasion, it goes into a comatose state. Have to either force a shutdown or a reboot to get out of it.

The chip in the battery is confused. If you short the two outer leads (Very Very Carefully and QUICKLY QUICKLY QUICKLY) you should be able to reset it. It's magic. Of course, it would be nicer if Apple offered a software reset utility for the battery (and cheaper for them too then replacing hundreds of batteries).
