I've had my original dual USB 500 iBook since they first came out. Just this morning when I opened it up from sleeping, I couldn't see the screen. The HD had spun up, so I thought that maybe it had frozen up (this happened ONCE before about 5 months ago). So, I rebooted and waited. While it was rebooting, I moved the screen angle slightly, and the picture all the sudden lit up. The screen is now picky about the angle, although no one angle works all the time.

I had read awhile ago on these forums about the video cable becoming pinched by the screen hinge or something to that effect. Is this what my problem is or is something else wrong? My machine is still under AppleCare, so I'm assuming that this type of thing would be covered.

Should I take it in to the Apple Store, or is there an easy at-home fix. On a side note, this problem may push me to take in my iBook because of its now banshee-like sounding HD. Has anyone else had this probem as well? Thanks for your help.

If it's still covered take it in. Apple will likely replace the video cable if the can reproduce the problem.

Call Apple and arrange for a shipping box. Take advantage of Apple Care, that's why you bought it. Also, be sure to tell them about your noisy hard drive.
I have a 500 ibook, too. Love it. And I'm glad I bought Apple Care as the problem with the screen/backlight seems to be widespread.
I hope Apple has found a way to fix this in the new ibooks. I love the form, but this problem would be enough to keep me from buying another Apple laptop.

<This URL deals with a user's attempts to repair the screen on his iBook. It was intermittently going black and, eventually, would not come back on.
The problem is that the monitor cable is fed from the chassis of the iBook, through the hinge, to the screen. Apparently, in time, some of the wires in the group sill fray, or, wear all the way through causing the intermittent flickering and, eventual loss of the display.>
