hi im buying the 12" pb and was thinking instead of getting the superdrive, to just get a combo drive and an external dvdr drive since the internal can only burn at 1X anyways. i just wanted to know if this was a good idea or not and if so, could someone reccomend a decent external drive.

thanks,

-paul

It's only a good idea if you don't want to use iDVD, since it isn't compatible with external drives.

Exactly, if you plan on using Apple's own iDVD to create them, you'll want to buy the built-in SuperDrive. However, if you have another DVD-making peice of software that you prefer, then you may want to do it that way.

If you want DVD-R, the it would be foolish to buy a PowerBook without DVD-R capability built-in.

As alluded to by the other people, you can't even RUN iDVD without a built-in DVD-R drive.

iDVD is one of the greatest DVD authoring programs ever created IMO.

The other issue is that OS X doesn't fully recognize all external drives, so even if the drive works, you might not be able to use the Finder or iTunes for burning with them. I have a CD-RW and DVD-RAM/-RW/-R that are not recognized by these programs for write capabilities (although they do work fine with Toast).

Besides, its always convenient to have a really portable burner - do you really want to have to connect up the laptop all the time?
