I'm wondering what can be done with the pb 12" built in sound...
Can you
-directly send input to output (for example to play a walkman on the pb speakers)
-have the speakers and the headphone plug working simultaneously
-have different things playing on speakers and headphone...
Anyone know how to do any of these? (at least the first two should be possible...)
And is there any recording software that comes with osx?

Oh, and BTW, the PB 12" is by far the sweetest laptop ever.

Check out the Audio/MIDI Configuration program in /Applications/Utilities .
You can set any audio device to directly pass through input signal to the output in that program.
AFAIK, the headphone plug is physically wired to disconnect the speakers when something is plugged in, so I'm afraid it won't be possible to route stuff either/or.
However, any additional audio interface will do this. OS X handles multiple interfaces really well.

I have a 12" AlBook, and my wife has a 400MHz, 1st gen TiBook, and I have to say that the sound is a bit better on the 12". Having said that, I still mostly use external speakers here at work plugged into the headphone jack, because the internal speakers aren't THAT good.... Basically, the bass isn't all that great compared to a subwoofer, but is still very good for such tiny speakers. Hmmm.... I wonder if I could record a sample of w/ speakers and w/o...
Ok, I did that. The problem is that using the internal microphone sucks, and I don't have a desktop microphone to test with, though I may get one tonight since my wife, the linguist, is going to do some sampling tonight. If I can get a decent recording that is at all reliable, I can post it if people are interested...

Thanks for the reply, Spheric Harlot...
I checked the audio midi configuration thingy, and set the input to go through. However, the input volume bar is grayed out, and I don't hear anything, so obviously something isn't working. Could they have disabled this option for some reason?
Concerning sound quality, it's decent. It's definitely better than a lot of laptop systems, but it's still hard to hear anything in a crowded room... I use the headphone plug a lot to record minidiscs though, and the sound quality is very good.

I must admit I'm a poor judge of that, having only an iMac DV 400 to compare to.
I've only just installed Logic 6 here (which seems to work well enough), and I haven't yet transferred the audio material.
Sorry I can't really help you out there.

My interfaces show up with a separate slider for each channel in the window at the bottom. The general volume sliders are grayed out as well, but they work.
Are you sure you've set the input to the correct interface?
What about the sound input preference in the System Preferences?

this is easily the best sounding notebook ever. i've checked out a wallstreet, pismo, ibook and the titanium, but the sound on this 12" is awesome, relatively of course.(probably cause they're amplified.

I'm pretty sure that "audio performance" in this context means just that (i.e. performance as an audio production workstation), and not "sound quality".
But yes, I'm genuinely surprised at the sound quality of the internal speakers. They handily beat the pants off most external computer speakers in truly being NOT annoying.
You can actually listen to music on them (it lacks a little bottom end, obviously, but it's not "ewww!" at all).
