I'm getting my first mac tomorrow (well provided it arrives that is!)and I was wondering if there was anything I should do when I get it - I mean in terms of wiping and clean installing or whatever. Should I do that, or leave it until I sort of know what I'm doing with it?

Nah, leave it alone. It should come pre installed with everything. You could run disk utility for privaledges after a week or so when you've installed your own software.

Enjoy! Mine should be here early next week..Hoorah

Yep, just get to using it! There's no real routine or ritual you need to put it through (aside from lots of picture taking!) and just get to installing your software and cutomizing things the way you want 'em! You'll probably spend awhile just getting adept to the beauty of OS X. Enjoy, and CONGRATS!!

cheers guys, I was kinda fretting that I'd have to do what you have to with Windows ones - ie wipe all the crap off it, and put back only what you want (which is usually windows, and therefore still not very good!)

Nooo, not at all! I hated installing WinXP cause the first thing you hafta do is like manually edit the sysoc.inf file to remove that annoying Windows Messenger, and then spend another good bit just removing useless stuff! Not like that on a Mac.

Well, even if you do find apps you don't like or need, you're free to drag them to the trash. One of the better bits of the Old Mac Way kept intact in X: no need to "uninstall" anything. Just toss it. Move on. Huzzah for simplicity!

Why would you want to do a clean install?? just get used to your new toy and then if ther is something that you don't want, then just delete it..

when i got my new tibook in february it asked for the install DVD on the first boot. it then installed OSX 10.2.1 in little under 4 minutes (w00t!). after that i went online and downloaded 200MB of upgrades (10.2.3, iEverything, ...) though Software Update.

Other than that there was nothing to prepare or worry about. Just make sure you have some spare time!

btw, congrats on the excellent buy. as a switcher myself i have a feeling what you will go through the first few hours.

I doubt it would ask for the 10.2.4 CD now, however, and I did forget to mention, in System Preferences you'll wanna run "System Update" to get a few patches and such that are out, like the newest Java.

I messed with my Ti when I first got it for a few hours and then formated and reinstalled so i had a nice clean install. After playing with every app I could get my hands on for a week I took another format and install and here i've been ever since

Argh! Not a delay! That stinks man, I sure hope it comes tomorrow for you! And it's highly doubtful it'll come w/ 10.2.5 but you can certainly d/load it when you get your PB. However, I wouldn't install it until some others try it first and report any issues with it.

No, your Tibook won't come with 10.2.5..
BTW 10.2.5 runs perfectly on my tibook 1ghz, no problem whatsoever so far... Just update when you get your new toy..

The only real reason you'd want to erase the HD when new is if you wanted to partition it, which is not important for the most experienced user, and then only when specifically necessary. So, don't worry about it. Run software update when you get it to get all the new versions of stuff (10.2.5 rocks!).

Here's hoping you get it tomorrow.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
