This has to be informal, since there are THREE questions:

1. Specs - What 'Book/MHz/RAM/OS?

2. OS X sleep life - Approximate hours or days until the battery's drained.

3. OS 9 sleep life - Ditto for comparison, if possible.

Does anyone know the technical explanation for X draining batteries while asleep? Related to faster waking? My PowerBook G3/333/192MB could go DAYS asleep in the bag under 9. Now, with X, it will drain in about a day and be dead next time I leave the house. VERY inconvenient, and since I need it just for travel, NOT worth the fast waking! I'm hearing that newer 'Books may also drain fast while asleep--in OS X.

I always assumed that powering components back on was pretty quick, and not a major factor in wake-time, but that dealing with restarting software processes with the main thing that makes X faster. That wouldn't drain the battery while asleep, though.

What exactly COULD be left powered on in sleep by X and not by 9? The RAM, sleep light, power button and hinge-sensor are always powered on during sleep, in both 9 and X. The CPU/GPU presumably cannot be on (too hot in a bag), nor any fans (blocked while in a bag). The HD is off (it sleeps even while the Mac is on sometimes). The optical drive, speakers, modem and screen must be off--no reason to have them on.

So what could X be sending power to during sleep? I'm very curious--not to mention hoping for a fix. PowerBooks going dead in the bag all the time is not worth fast wake if your laptop isn't your main system--X needs a "deep sleep" maybe! (I always did like the save-and-sleep option that got cut from the OS.)
