I've always considered by PowerBook 800DVI to be a big beast - not in the sense of a big computer, this is one skinny yet solid computer, but width. Until last night.
I had a broker (and a damn hot one at that!) around to discuss home loans and she whipped out her Toshiba notebook. I've always loved Toshiba notebooks and worked with them for many, many years. Ever since purchasing my PowerBook a year ago I've looked upon Toshibas and IBMs, the best PC notebooks, as horrible huge plastic things. Last night was the same - boy that was one thick fragile ugly notebook, but it was HUGE!
I'm guessing her Toshiba was a 15". My PowerBook was sitting on the other side of the table and the width was fine, but since she's widescreen she was obviously not as tall. So ultimately you had this insanely thick ugly black plastic notebook and an absolutely gorgeous thin metal PowerBook, but the screen size of the Toshiba dwarfed my PowerBook.
I couldn't help but think "Man, if only I could show you my 17 inch..." - PowerBook that is
Anyways, my point is that whilst looking at the Toshiba and PowerBook opposite each other I realised the 17" PowerBook won't be THAT big... if only the damn thing would arrive

Hehe, nice story man!
And you're very right, the 17" PB really is tiny in comparison to oversized PC notebooks w/ undersized screens. The new Dell's w/ the 16" screen are MASSIVELY thick and horribly bulky looking...for some reason they look like they were made in 1983 or something...bleh.
But anyways, best of luck w/ your machine arriving soon!

Yup i agree. I had a Toshiba Satellite Pro before with a 15" screen and if you put it side by side with a PB 15" /17", it looks huge. The highest resolution on the Toshiba notebook can only goes up to 1024 X 768. PB on the other side has a higher resolution and the screen is smaller and wider. I guess PB is built to see the wider picture rather than a taller one

I agree completely. For a PowerBook the 17" is big, but compared to most Windows machines it really seems small. I am an engineer, so most of my friends and associates have Windows laptops. Almost all of them have drooled over my PowerBook. In fact I am surprised at how envious they seem. They ask the standard questions about compatibility, price and the single-button mouse, but you can tell they would like to have one.
Anyway, that's a bit off topic. What I was going to say is that they also comment on how sleek and sexy it is. I mean, sleek and sexy does not infer big to me. They have even commented that it is pretty light when they pick it up. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Not to pick on New Zealanders, but island have you been living on? My toshiba does 1440x uh, something. WHatever. You get the point.
But your point and that of those amongst you remain. Powerbooks absolutely rock. Now back to the regularly scheduled diet of good vibes.

I've been taking my 17" all over town since I got it and love showing it to my friends. I usually get two reactions, if not both. "Holy crap, that screen is enormous," and/or "the interface looks a lot like XP."
The second response, I just nod my head and say, "Sure, I could see that." But in my head I'm saying, "You fool! You have no idea! Now you must die!"
Ok, well maybe not, but I think a lot of it is just due to the slight jealousy factor setting in. I got a new toy that is too damn cool, plain and simple.
Now to use my toy to type a paper...
