I have a slight problem/issue. I've been using an external monitor with my 17" powerbook (using extended desktop mode, not mirroring). I accidently changed the resolution on the external monitor to a resolution it doesn't support, so now nothing shows up on the monitor....no video, not anything....it just faintly clicks like it's trying to change the resolution but it can't.
I've tried putting my powerbook to sleep and unplugging and replugging in the external monitor but that didn't reset the resolution to anything usable.
Any ideas on how I can reset the resolution on the external monitor? Delete a prefs file or something?
I tried searching the apple knowledge base but couldn't find anything...

You should simply be able to connect the external display, then on the 17" PBs display go into "System Preferences" and "Displays" and go to "Detect Displays". After that, the screen may just come back on, or if not, it should allow you to alter it's resolution from within the 17" PBs screen. Let us know what turns out! Good luck!

Oh, and another option if that doesn't work...try setting the 17" PB to a lower resolution that is also supported by your external monitor, plug it in, go to "Detect Displays" and it might send that selected resolution out the external montior as well, and after that happening of course, you can independently alter each screen resolution to your liking.

I tried your suggestions....they didn't work. Then I realized with the monitors menu extra in the finder bar, I could change the resolution of the external monitor to what I needed it to be. Doh! I didn't even think to look at it....I was trying too hard to figure out a way to do it through the displays pref panel in System Prefs.
thanks for your help though, I appreciate it!
And your reward is(taken from another site):

I know.....and I must say....the trailer looks sweeeeeeeeeeet on my 17" powerbook screen. And even playing the sound through the internal speakers wasn't too bad either.
