I woke my Al 12" powerbook (640MB,10.2.3, Airport) from sleep and something very strange started happening. The screen would go blue and blank, then my desktop pattern would come up, then the icons would show up, then the menu bar would show up, then everything goes blank and the whole cylcle starts over again, and again, etc.-same order.
I could only shutdown by holding the power button down, then I restarted, everything acted normal, but then after the OSX splash screen showed , and the desktop started to load, the whole thing started over again. Whats going on???
I have some files that I am concerned about, would it be a good idea to reboot in target disk mode so I can transfer some files to my desktop via firewire??? Or would I be better to startup with my 10.2 disk, and run disk first aid? Any help would be appreciated.
thanks;

I would save the files you want in firewire target mode, as Mohammed said, then reintall Jagwire using the archive and install function. Make sure you check the save personal info and network settings before you do this.
I had a strange problem with classic launches freezing the computer until I did this. It was incredibly easy and now my book runs a lot better, and classic launches fine. I can't believe how easy apple made it to reinstall the system. THANKS MR. JOBS!

I was able to back up files in target disk mode. I booted from install cd, and ran repair disk from disk first aid, and repaired disk permissions from CD. Repair disk found a few problems, one of which was some type of problem with login window, but nothing much else. I then rebooted, but everything is the same. I noticed that I don't have a startup chime. I have noticed this after you have to do a shutdown by just holding the powerkey down. I don't know what else to do but reinstall system software. I may wait to talk to apple tech support on Monday. Has anyone had good luck with 10.2.5 on the 12" PB?
Thanks for the info.

Any "REALLY BIZARRE" problems are mostly solved with reinstalling OSX. It is really tough to zero in on the actual problem file like OS9.
I suggest an Arcive and Install and preserve the Users files option. It will probably solve your problems and only screw up some startup kernel extensions.

If the whole screen goes blue, that means the machine is doing a video mode transition. This happens when you change the screen resolution or hotplug the TV or RGB dongles. Check your external video port to make sure that there are no metal pieces or anything in there that could be shorting the contacts. Did this fade to blue happen when you booted up from another disk? If so, then that is really weird. Or, maybe it's just the Finder continuously crashing and restarting itself. The OS reinstall would fix that.
