So my iBook died the logicboard death and as part of the repair, Apple wiped my hard drive - without specifically alerting me to the act and without bringing my attention to the fact that data is not covered by the warranty. Apple's apologies are not good enough and they seem far too unperturbed by the sheer scale of this iBook fault - I've not heard anything about recalls or compensation. One random fault is one thing, but recurrent identical failures across a product line is another.
If Apple has ever screwed you over with respect to a failed iBook, tell your story here. If some noise is made, maybe some justice can be extracted.

I've had three things replaced on my 800mhz/Combo iBook since buying it in January: logic board, DC coverter board, and the A/C adaptor. (And the replacement A/C adaptor is still sparking every now and then.

That’s strange when I sent in my iBook for combo drive, and screen bezel replacement they asked me in the event that they have to wipe the HD, do I want data salvaged and if so it would cost $50 bucks.
My only main problem with them was they were never able to keep any of the 3 return ETA dates they gave me which took just under a month but that was a lot of complaining and stuff and they did compensate me =)
You should make some noise it will get you "stuff".

How did they compensate you? I am wondering as my PB has been in for 17 days and had to go back for the same problems for another 7-10 days. I was told that Apple doesn't compensate.

Not sure if this is the same issue or not, but my iBook started smoking from under the hinge (or so). They ended up replacing the power supply and the M/B I believe. They were quick to fix it (and ask me a million questions with regards to the smoke, like did I have to call the fire department). However, they did forget to send back the aftermarket ram I had installed, which took them a few days to get back to me.

my ibook (800) video card just died last week. i plugged the RCA-VGA adaptor in while in sleep mode, when i woke it up, there was no video. it's a good thing the hard drive still works, the good folks at my apple centre are letting me back everything up via target disk mode before i part with my laptop.
btw, the new ibook prices in australia just went down from the last model -- they're finally calculating the rising currency into the pricing!

my ibook 700 died the other day.....screen froze up and couldn't reboot.
The local apple repairer ordered a new motherboard and screen.....got it back in about a week. It worked for 2 days and then froze up again (apparently a faulty motherboard was sent). Lukily the repairer had a 2nd motherboard sent for someone else (sorry to that other person ) so he put that straight in and i got it back the next day
i was pretty happy it was all done locally and quickly (except for needing repairing twice) and my harddrive was untouched. all on warranty to.
Got me thinking though - all the labour, 2 motherboards and a new screen must cost as much as a new ibook, wish they just gave me a new one instead......but i guess some people might start deliberatly screwing there machines to get a new model if they did that?

My first iBook (Dual 500) was trouble free. My Dual 800 has just had a rash of troubles. I just received a new battery to correct my recharging problem and just this weekend my video went out. The genius at the local apple store couldn't get anything working so I had to send it off to Apple for repair.
Hopefully that's the last problem...

It is not Apples faul it you do not read the fine print. Every computer I have ever had says data loss is not covered. It is up to you to back up your programs.
