Hey there, I was wondering: when I open up my powerbook outside when the sun shines, I can't see a thing on my LCD (even in the shadow). Are there any tricks to be able to look at the screen. (yes I can see a littlebit when in the shadow and the brightness to max, but that's not really ideal) How the hell do thoses people in the desert work with their PowerBooks/iBooks ? Also when I let the sun shine full frontal on my screen the whites turn green pretty cool, but quite annoying. So it comes down to this: I want to be able to work outside, or can I forget about this ?

I know there's some type of hood that you can use, almost looking like the sunshade you have on a baseball cap. Only problem is I can't remember who makes them so I can't give you a link.

Every time I've seen someone using a laptop in Iraq during the day they had some sort of hood that shielded the screen from the sun. Also notice that they use a mammoth shield in the NFL when the refferie looks at a replay. You could probably construct something out of cardboard, but that wouldn't exactly match the sexiness of your PB

To shorten it: Yes you can forget about that! Even in bright environment (many big windows/sunny day) i sometimes find it hard to work with a laptop. But it“s not an specific Apple prob, you get it with every VAIO, Dell, Tosh, etc.

Check out the Hoodman Eclipse E-2000 for a very effective (and strange looking) sun shade. I sure am glad I don't have to use my LCD outside! I wouldn't want to have to use something like that too often.

While they're not common (and Apple doesn't make any), there are laptops which can be used in the sun. If you need this capability, you should search for laptops with transflective displays for indoor/outdoor use, or for laptops that will solely be used in very bright situations, you can use reflective displays, which eliminate the backlight entirely.

I know that NEC makes such a laptop...the dayversa or something.

The advice I can give to computing in the sun is...try to position the laptop so that the sun is directly behind the laptop, not you...to avoid the most glare.

Also remember to not leave the laptop in the sun too long...it heats up quite a bit! I left my laptop in the car under the sun...that thing almost burned me! It still works...but advice to everyone. Beware of leaving your laptop in the sun...

http://www.coolshield.com/

Saw these guys at MacWorld this year, really friendly at the booth. Not sure exactly how effective they are since I didn't have a chance to try them outdoors.
