Here is my situation. I am trying to record with this laptop but the line-in is giving me problems. I have tried to turn it up with the settings, but it is very unresponsive. I am using a sony condensor mic that I used with my MD player for a really long time with great results. Whats the deal?

Hmmm, what software are you using? Have you made sure in the System Preferences that the Line-In volume is turned up, because sometimes those simple levels can getcha.
Do you have any other mics/instruments to try through the Line-In jack?

I am using sound studio right now. The levels are cranked up in the system prefs. so I have no idea what it is. I dont have any other mics, but this on worked in every other device I used it with.

Hmm...have you cranked all the levels dealing w/ Line-In from within your software as well? If so, and no amount of playing around will yeild you any luck, you just may hafta end up calling AppleCare...I hope it works out man.

I think I've got the same mic as you do. Mine is working great, no level problems at all. I'd suggest trying a new battery (if yours is indeed the same as mine), just to be sure.
Good luck.

Can you post details on the mic you're using? Some do not supply enough of a level to be usable.

Damn, I don't know the details on that one. I do however remember that we had problems with Sony mics before. Running them through a pre-amp solved the issue.
Sorry I can't be of any more help on this one.

So i have to buy a pre amp for this thing now. I went to the local sound place here and found that the expensive pre amp solved most of the problem. Is this BS? I have a hard time believing that my MD used the same mic just fine and the levels were always great. Does anyone know of a diferent external mic I could use? I wonder If I wasnt using a condenser mic if that would help
