It's huge. The Power Mac is two to three times faster than the PowerBook for processor-intensive tasks.

PowerBook 1 GHz is about the same in processing speed (Photoshop) as PowerMac 500 MHz.

A 1-gigahertz PowerBook is much faster than a 500-megahertz Power Mac.

yup. I have a 733MHz with 1.5GB RAM, and my new 17" is faster.

As stated by sean, the speed difference between a Dual 1Ghz+ PowerMac and a single 1Ghz 17" PowerBook is massive, escp. in majorly intensive tasks such as the ones you mentioned. But it's not exactly fair to expect a notebook computer to perform the same as a desktop w/ such cooling and mobile limitations...for being a notebook the 17" PB holds its own extremely well.

That is such BS. It's close to twice as fast for audio (logic audio is what I use), and easily twice as fast for everything else. I know this from every day experience.
anyway, here are some benchmarks.

Be aware that I use FCP 3 and it works fine, (though I have modified the RT enablers). I have no desire to have a powermac. I don't even consider it an option. Powerbooks are powerful enough that, the way I see it, apple only makes laptops.
That's not to say that powermacs are not much more powerful. I'm just not hurting for power at the moment at all. And, yes, I do a TON of rendering with AE, FCP and Cinema 4DXL. Actually, the only one that takes a long time is Cinema 4D, but OS X allows me to work on anything else while it's rendering without an overly noticable speed hit.

I haven't used a new PowerBook in a while, but my dual 867 PowerMac is MUCH faster than my PowerBook 800. Don't have any hard numbers for you. I'd expect the comparison between a dual 1GHz+ and a 1GHz PowerBook would be roughly the same.
