Even at maximum volume setting, the DVD playback volume level through the speakers seems low. Anyway around this?

Use headphones, or if possible, plug in to some good speakers

Not entirely due to this - DVD volume is lower than that of mp3s in iTunes for instance. No way around it that I've found I'm afraid.

Here's a theory I thought I'd just throw out there:

When you're listening to TV and have a mono signal, the volume is "normal." Then, when a stereo signal comes in, the volume increases, right?

Well, since many DVD's have surround sound, perhaps their just missing out on that extra oomph provided by more channels.

I've noticed sudden drops in volume on my iBook, where "regular" DVD players do not exhibit this behavior. I'm thinking sound shifts to speakers that don't exist so the rest of the sound being sent to the only speakers there is lowered.

I could be wrong, so don't go telling your friends that this is the problem, I'm just thinking out loud.

Surround signals on stereo outputs are a bit lower in my experience. But I honestly think the problem must be somewhere else. If I just bothered rebooting into os 9 to test the dvd sound output there..

Its nothing to do with OS9 or OS X, both exhibit the same behaviour and so too do the Windows laptops I've seen DVDs played on. Laptops with louder speakers than the iBook's have, would make this less noticeable but it seems to just be something to do with the sound on DVD discs. DivX video from ripped DVDs seems to play a bit louder.
