A friend of mine has a 600mhz 14" ibook and out of the blue the modem stopped working. The error is "Failure to connect to communications device." He did no updates and was running 10.2.3. I updated to 10.2.5, and tried an Archive and Install but the problem persists. Is this likely a hardware problem?

Have you tried running the hardware check CD that came with the iBook? Other than that, no idea... Sorry.

If hardware test CD runs OK, try to reset the PRAM (hold down command-option-P-R during startup).

Have tried the hardware check and it says it's fine. Reset PRAM as well to no avail. It works intermittently now, say 1 out of 100 times.

Also, check if the modem cord was attached during an electrical storm. There is a possibility that the modem got fried during a thunderstorm.
