Dear guys, i'm reading all this stuff about DVD-RW etc, and 2x for the Superdrive. Currently I have d D0CB firmware, as most owners. (BTW, I have a 12" G4). Are there any chances they will release a new firmware with DVD-RW and 2x for the superdrive? Any word?

Sincerely,
Mel

This is highly doubtful that the current AlBook's will get a firmware update making their SuperDrives burn DVD's faster, and its all because the machine's hafta run cool, and burning DVD's at a faster rate would just make the machine get hotter and hotter. Too, the faster it burns, the faster it eats away battery life, and Apple prides itself in boasting that it's machine can burn DVD's on battery power, something Wintel notebooks currently cannot do.

It's possible, and you're not alone in hoping that Apple does it. A good thread to check is the sticky one at the top of the Powerbook forum.

I'd also like DVD-RAM...

Why? This is the least accepted standard of the three. You can't even find the disks in most stores. A drive that is DVD-R will never burn a DVD-RAM disk, especially when it comes from Apple. Also, DVD-R and DVD-RW are the standards embraced by the DVD Consortium, meaning they're the standards that will survive, no matter what HP says.

As for a firmware update to enable DVD-RW, don't hold your breath. It could be that Apple crippled that ability because the burner is stable enough to do RW while being bumped around in a laptop.

I'm not sure what you mean about drives not supporting both. A UJ-815 is an example of a drive that *will* burn both DVD-R and DVD-RAM, just that Apple haven't supplied it that way.

I want DVD-RAM to burn data for my own use, and I couldn't care less if it's widely supported or not. It seems like a better method for doing this than DVD-RW or DVD+RW. The -RAM discs are readily available here in London, so that's not a problem either.
