gulp, well I just splashed out on a refurb 12" powerbook, my first mac and indeed laptop, and I need to carry it in something!

Anybody got a Tucano Second Skin Folder for a 12" powerbook, or indeed any other laptop?
I quote...

The Tucano "Second Skin" Bag are made of Neopren (scuba-diving material) and have been custom-made to fit snugly and protect the PowerBook G4 12" against scratches and falls.
An inner lip protects against potential scratches from the zipper. This folder is for every PowerBook owner who doesn“t want or need a typical notebook carrying case. Ideal when carrying the PowerBook in a backpack, suitcase, purse or simply in your hand like a notebook from school. The grey/silver color matches the PowerBook well.

Im looking for something that I can put the laptop in so I can pretty much just toss it in my ordinary messenger bag and forget about it.

it looks pretty neat in the picture, but I don't think any physical stores around here will carry it. interestingly it dosen't seem to be on the US apple store site. well priced at aout £25 shipped (39 dollars to you!)

the other, more expensive but pobably more protective option, is to get a waterfield designs sleevecase, more functional but dosent look as good IMHO
good picture here main page here , from $37 to $70 depending on the options, plus $14+ to ship it here to the U of K.

Thanks in advance for any input!

This is semi-offtopic, but I am absolutely in love with my 17" Slim Case in black:

Nothing. I repeat, NOTHING, beats a Waterfield (www.sfbags.com) case. I have a 12" and I LOVE the sleeve (it fits like a glove, the neoprene form-fitting is awesome).

I would heartily recommend it.

I'll second the recommendation of the Waterfield Designs sleeve--I love mine! I added the strap so I can carry it as a lightweigh case by itself, or remove the strap and carry it inside another bag when I need to carry more stuff.

Thanks for the input guys, the one of the fellows over at Ars technica suggested a timbuk2 laptop sleeve , that was the second place, but I like the more professional ( and less feminine ) look of the waterfield, also the fact there customer service seems spot on and the encouraging fact they make cases for cameras etc: too has pretty much sold me on them.

The waterfield just looks to be more protective, I like the neoprean inner, and there both a lot more padded and durable than the tuscano for my needs.

Now, do I add a strap , I think the flaps good, decisions decisions!

Tell me more about this bag please!
- Can you use it in a backpack (vertical)?
- Are those hand-grips flexible / can they be "hidden"?
- How's the protection?
Thanks.

I'm deciding between Waterfield and booqbags.com's PowerSleeve 17.

Did you buy the optional ballistic flap for your WF? Is the top of WF without flap open? Not too good when carrying it as a lightweigh case by itself.

not a major Muzo myself, but if I didn't mention !dundrummin in this situation a good mate of mine would probably hit me :-)

I've gone for the waterfield with the flap, Liked the timbuk2 but like you say I don't like the way it looks 'open' at the top, and its not entirly custom made for the 12" so the fit might be more snug. the tuscano looks nice in photos, but shouldn't be as protective. the waterfield is meant to be positively bullet proof. I'm sure there all pretty good for general use though.

Diden't really notice the booq before, looks pretty good, and the price might have sold me if I had notised it before but I prefer the waterfields style, so I don't mind!

didn't bother with the strap because I expect if I'm only carrying the lappy then tucking i under one arm would be fine. any other time it will probably live in my messenger bag, so a nice, flapped case that can keep it safe from any bumps and spills is adequate.

as your in europe too if you go for the waterfield you might want to shoot them a mail about shipping,in my experience USPS global priority is about the best, usually takes 5 days ( although did once take 30, I suspect customs ) I've bought tons of stuff from the US and usually try to get this. saves a few bucks!

oh and I have to use this because I love it

That's what I think too. Price vs. design.

Have you seen a Waterfield sleeve for real? I did e-mail concerning shipping.

By the way:

I added the D-Rings, Shoulder Strap, and Flap. To date I have not used the ShoulderStrap/DRings very much, but the Flap is a MUST HAVE.

Yes, you can use it in a larger bag / backpack. I haven't had a problem throwing it into a backpack vertically.

The hand grips are very flexible, yes, but they cannot be hidden. They can be folded flat against the outer sides of the sleeve though.

The protection is very good, there's a very soft quilted interior covering a hard plastic shell, and the outer material is very durable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Nate. Are you happy with it? How's the fit for the 17" PB?

I actually have the 12" but the fit is EXCELLENT. As far as I know, both the 12" and the 17" are made custom for the PowerBook, so I'd imagine the fit would be similar.

It is tight fitting, but easy to remove from the sleeve. Great protection, I feel like I can drop it without worry (which I of course refrain from doing).

Yes, I got the flap for the WF sleeve for my 12" PB. It is basically open without it. I think the flap is a must-have if you plan on carrying the case by itself rather than inside another bag.
