hi i'm a switcher to the powerbook 17", is the sizzle problem covered under apple's standard warranty because i'm getting major headaches by it, and this is inexcusable for a $3300 computer

Do we even know what is causing it yet? If we have, I was unaware of that development.
Also, I'm beginning to wonder if the sizzle/screech is louder on some computers. I can barely hear mine. Perhaps there's a lot of ambient noise in my room, but I can barely pick it up. I was in the library as well today and it was just the same.

I don't think it is, since Apple themselves already said that is a normal noise for the 17 inch... in which every 17 has it.

What exactly is the "sizzle"? Because our 2-day-old PB17 doesn't make any noise at all under normal oeration - totally silent. The only time it makes noise is a 1-second long, 2-note buzz when the machine is woken up from sleep.
I've heard that the sizzle has been cured by replacing the heat sink. Look in the "Fantastic AppleCare Service" thread.

Just got my new PB 17. I have the same sizzle in the keys and an annoying very high frequency. It isn't that noticeable with ambient noice(TV, low vol radio, talk etc.).However when all is quiet, it drives me nuts. I am curious if it will be covered as it is UNACCEPTABLE!

I hope eventually this is fixed by software. My 17" PB had no sizzle until I sent it in for a repair of the DVI port (which didn't get fixed BTW). When it returned I had to re-install OS X because of a corrupt installer.app. After either receiving it back or after re-installing OS X, I now have the ANNOYING sizzle under the keyboard 100% of the time. I miss my completelyl quit PB!
