tho you read those stories about Apple giving lame excuses for some repairs not being covered by AppleCare, it would certainly be nice to have for the times they do...

there is a thread around about adding PBs to homeowner's insurance... not the quickest way to get problems solved, but seemingly a suitable alternative if apple flips you the bird.

i am also trying to decide the same thing. Money is a big issue right now though. I like the fact that we have up until 1 year of the original warranty to decide if we want to purchase applecare. =). So if something drastically goes wrong within a year, I go to apple store, pick up box, register, and ring ring, hey apple =)

Sincerely,
Mel

If money's an issue, hold off for a bit. Remember, you have up until the last day of your original 1-year warrenty to purchase the extended AppleCare warrenty; it's not any cheaper or anything to purchase it along w/ your PB. The only downside is that makes your phone support last only 90 days.

I'd *certainly* get AppleCare on a 12" PB for two reasons. First, it's a notebook. Much different than a desktop in that it's next to impossible to work on/replace things yourself like you can with a desktop machine. Second, it's a first-edition of a product that's already proven to have more "bad units" out there than usual.

Just hold off until the nearing of the end of your first year, and then get AppleCare.

Ditto what AssassyN said. Wait until you have a couple weeks left on your warranty and buy Applecare, it's definitely worth it on a PB. Homeowner's Ins is good if your system gets destroyed or accidently damaged, but it probably won't cover a hard drive that dies, a malfunctioning optical drive, a glich in firmware, etc.

YES it is worth it!

I had it on the Beige G3,
I now have it on the DP 533 and
I got it on my wife's Tibook.

The biggest payoff was with the Tibook. We just got a new machine because we have had soo much trouble with the original one. With out the Applecare we would be out of luck.

The phone support is the best with Applecare.

My $.02 worth.
