Just wondering... can I use the same charger that I use on my iBook to charge my 17" PB? It sure would be convenient so my living room isn't strewn with cables.

Yep. If you're doing something that draws a lot of power (watching DVDs, etc), it might draw off the battery a little bit, because the new adapters that come with the 17" (and sold seperately) are 65W, instead of 55W. But, I'm using an old 55W adapter with no problems. I watched some DVDs one right after another, and plugged in an adapter, and it charged the battery, although VERY slowly. It gained about 10% an hour.

So, it might not charge as fast, but it will work and won't cause damage, either to the PowerBook or to the adapter.

That's actually not a good idea. Using an adapter with an incorrect wattage rating for your machine can cause problems. Just because it functions with additional power from the battery doesn't mean something can't go wrong. Now, its probably not going to blow it up or anything like that but generally laptops are not designed to have two streams of power operating concurrently. It would probably be fine for charging it if it was off or in sleep mode though.
