I'm a digital photographer who puts lots of CF and Micro drive cards in the slot on my 1Ghz Tibook, 10.2.4 In the past few weeks, any of my 5 512MB ridata cards or 2 1 gig Microdrives cause the same thing, it takes forever to get them recognized. If I try and remove the card before it gets recognized, I get a kernel panic. Any thoughts? Much thanks....Peter

No thoughts, really, but I'm having the same problem- I've had to wait up to 5 minutes. You could get hold of a Microtech Zio USB CF reader- those work fine for me.

I only had Kernel Panics when I put in the PCMCIA-adapter in the computer if the screen saver was on or if the computer was in sleep. But now something physical has struck too, I can't even insert the whole adapter, it lacks about 4-5 mm. So I rushed out to buy me a card reader that can read any media. It's worht the money and they are small enough to travel with. Get a firewire version and you'll thank me extra much. Faster!

I have the same problem with my Sandisk 512 ultra CF and Lexar 256Mb 24x CF. Seems to work best if I eject the empty PCMCIA first (since I use it a lot, I usually just leave the PCMCIA in all the time), insert the CF, then insert the PCMCIA into the TiBook.
If I insert the CF into the PCMCIA while the PCMCIA is already in the TiBook, then the machine hangs up - or maybe I think it's hung, cuz I don't think I've been patient enough to wait 5 minutes.

Petra- You have a good point. I'd rather buy a firewire card reader than send the tibook in...but....the slot was working fine the first few months. Thanks for the suggestion.....Peter

I've reported the problem now with my "local" Apple Center, I've said it's no rush to get it fixed but I *DO* want to get it fixed. So if they have a date where they can take it in and perhaps replace the PC-card slot over the day, I'll go with it... otherwise I'll wait.

Upgrading to 10.2.5 fixed the problem! I hoped, but didn't expect it. after cloning my 10.2.4 as back up, I upgraded, and, presto chango, the card slot is working normally. Give it a try, hope it works for you guys.....Peter

The first time this happened was after I upgraded to X.2.5.
Rebooted again and the problem went away.

Seems to be an OS problem rather than a hardware problem; I have the same issue with a 17" PowerBook with 10.2.5.
The only pattern I've noticed is that it occurs after the PowerBook has been in sleep for a while. If it's right after a reboot, or even after a short sleep period, there's no problem.
I've tried different PCMCIA adapters, different cards, but it makes no difference.

Eud and Sean- Interesting. Certainly I rebooted after upgrading. I'll keep an eye on this pattern, but, I have tried rebooting while I was in 10.2.4 and it didn't fix it. Probably several issues with the OS and the reader....Peter

Same problem here with a MacAlly card reader on a 12" AlBook, after upgrading to 10.2.5. Rebooting helped.

Actually I meant that it happened in X.2.5, but long after I installed X.2.5 with several reboots before this happened.
I was just saying that when I got the hung OS and removed the CF card, I got a kernel panic. Rebooting at that point solved my CF card issue and it worked fine after that.
