*fffffffffffffft* My 15.2 inch Powerbook arrived the other week and this thing is solid. I'd go so far as to say that it's the best computer I've ever used.

I was in your shoes too, but since no one really knows when the new AL models will be out, and I needed a portable then for work, I went with the 1ghz TI in late march, and I have to agree with the previous poster. The design is not new, but that means that you already have a ton of accessories made for it, plus a huge installed base of users, should there be any questions.

If you need a unit now, the current 15" is great, and you won't be sorry. If you don't mind waiting (perhaps into the mid-summer months) then you could get the new model, or Apple may drop the price on the TI.

I want a new Powerbook so badly... I love the form factor, I love the durability of the things, I love the screen...but I have vowed to never buy another G4 based Mac.

For the last 2 years I have bought machines to 'tide myself over' until the G5, 7500, Power4 Lite, 970 hits the streets...

I was in the store the other day and was so tempted by a 12" Alubook. Even had my wallet out, but in the end just couldn't bring myself to do it...

I really hate to say it but, I think you really need to look at what your money buys your right now on the Intel side of the market. Apple is behind, way behind and even the most optimistic rumors for what is coming leaves them behind. Even the outrageous things Apple could do, which they won't leave them behind Wintel interms of what your $$ buys you. This is not the Year of the Laptop for Apple that it is for Wintel. Rather, it is a continuation of the Year of the Boutique.....

There'll always be something new 'coming'; you wouldn't want Apple to stay stagnant...

So the question really is whether or not you can wait, that is how much and how soon you need a laptop, since you probably have to factor in the usual waiting period after the announcement.

My guess is that it's coming towards the end of May to mid-June. Vague, I know, but this might help make up your mind.

If the 970 comes to the laptop, the tables will be nicely turned.

That, and Centrinos "new-fangled" wireless technology is dirt slow compared to airport extreme.

I could never, ever consider a PC... I bleed rainbow colours and always will

And, I have to totally disagree with you about the competition... having seen what is on offer in the PC world, Apple is not way behind at all...

I mean, just think of the awesome Mac only software for a start... (FCP, DVD Studio Pro,etc etc) And can anyone tell me with a straight face, that any x86 OS is even anywhere near OS X...

Watch how quickly things change when the 970 hits the streets...

Peace,

Marc

I don't need the machine until August, so I have time to wait...

I agree at June as well... A preview at WWDC, and shiping a few moths later would be very indeed

Don't know why, but I think we may see a desktop and laptop (only the 15 inch) update at the same time...

Here's hoping...

Quite honestly, I don't understand why people think that the 15-inch PowerBook won't be updated until this summer. If you look back at the records, the PowerBook updates are coming more frequently than they had before, and are now averaging about every six months.

G3 PowerBook Lombard: May 10, 1999
G3 PowerBook Pismo: Feb. 16, 2000
G4 PowerBook 400/500: Jan. 9, 2001
G4 PowerBook 550/667: Oct. 16, 2001
G4 PowerBook 667/800: April 29, 2002
G4 PowerBook 867/1GHz: Nov. 6, 2002

As a matter of fact, one year ago tomorrow was when the 667/800 DVI models were released with the eMac. Interesting that there's a special event planned for tomorrow dealing with music. Maybe they'll throw us a bone and update the 15-inch PowerBook too?

There are those people who say that the 15-inch PowerBook won't be upgraded soon because they just got the new 17-inch models shipping. Maybe. But those are new models to the series and they were announced only three months after the Titanium line had been updated. Now were at the end of 4 months since the 12-inch and 17-inch PowerBooks were announced -- a good month since PowerBook 17-inch models have been shipping -- and people are saying that it can be possible that they'd update the 15-inch powerbook which hasn't seen an update since November 6th of last year.

In 2000, people waited seemingly forever for Apple to update the PowerBook to a G4 processor. The PowerBook went almost 11 months without an update. For all the flawed logic spewed about regarding the sensibility of updating the 15-inch in the near future, if the 15-inch DOES NOT get updated soon, I will take that to mean that it too will be upgraded to a new processor.

It will have a new processor, but it won't be a variant of the IBM PowerPC 970.

Yeah but Sean if it's another G4 - that's going to be like whoop-de-doo. The G4 is here, what the hell is the wait?
