So I've had my Powerbook G4 for over a year now, and it needed some upgrading. It was running ok, but I knew I could make it better. Here were the original specs:

PowerPC G4/400
384 Ram
10 GB 4200RPM HD

After doing alot of research on the XLR8 website, I choose to overclock the processor as my first step. And if that succeeded then I would order more ram and a bigger and faster hard drive. Needless to say overclocking your notebook is NOT for the fient of heart. But with patience and a steady hand I was successful. Anyway, here are my NEW specs:

PowerPC G4/500
768 Ram
40 GB 5400RPM IBM HD

Sweet! OS X has never run better! My aging notebook has new life and now it's ready for panther. I should have written down some performance benchmarks from before, but I never got around to it. But it is definately faster! Or should I say "snappier"?

Wow, that is a huge improvement. Congratulations. Just a few questions? Do you notice your PB getting hotter now that you overclocked it? Are you taking any precautions to keep it from overheating?

Thanks

Sincerely,
Mel

Nope the notebook does not run hotter and battery life is still relatively the same. I've been running it at 500 mhz for only a week, but it hasn't locked up yet, and it seems really stable. I don't run anything too intensive on it yet, although I was using Photoshop recently and it ran fine.

The finder especially seems to have improved the most.

How did you go about overclocking the processor. Also, can one do this using the new 12" 867's?? I'd love to see some benchmarks before/after overclocking on your computer.

If someone has done this using a 12", POST!

Nate

Check out this site for overclocking the Powerbook G4:

Voelker

I would imagine that the powerbook 867 is overclockable as well, but the motherboard is probably different?? AND that's a pretty new machine to be tinkering with, isn't it?
